How to remove smoke odor, cigarette smoke, and pet odor from a car...

by Tammy Harris on 06/16/10

If you just bought a used car with pet hair and pet odor or stopped smoking you are probably interested in how to remove these smells.  For people who stopped smoking a lingering smell of cigarette smoke may cause to you to be tempted to start smoking again.

It is important to have the interior of your vehicle professionally detailed.  A deep vacuuming, the use of a professional hot water shampooer with the usage of an odor enzeyme product, through cleaning of all vinyl, hard plastic and leather and a professional grade ozone machine runned for some time with your air vents circulating is the best bet to removing these odors. If not all these steps are followed then there is a possibility the odor will still be there.

Masking odor with air freshners, baking soda, Fabreeze or other products will only mask the odor for a small amount of time.  Bottom line, the thing causing the odor is still there.

If you smoked in the car you may have to replace the headliner.  There are companies out there that say they shampoo the headliner.  But in reality they are probably just hand cleaning it with a towel.  Headliners are glued to the interior roof of your car.  If you get that wet or use steam on it there is a big chance the headliner will fall.  So your best bet is to replace it.  You can call any auto upholstery shop to get a quote on this service.

Dog hair is very difficult to remove, especially if you have a short breed dog like a boxer.  Use a professional pet hair removal brush.  Just remember, you will not be able to remove every strand of hair (same thing for sand in a car).  But really spending time doing a deep vacuuming with the right tool(s) will help remove the dog hair smell.  We have two dogs, Niko our Bernese Mountain & Collie mix and Mufasa our Chow & Golden Retriever mix.  We follow the steps listed above to remove dog hair from my vehicle all the time; and people are always amazed that they can not smell any dog odors.
